About Us
The market began in March
2003 as an attempt to recreate
a medieval market environment
in a modern setting. The need
was felt for a place where people
could gather on a Sunday for
a quiet meal or just a coffee,
and meet other members of the
community. It became so popular
that a television crew from
the city came up to one of our
Autumn Gatherings, and it went
on from there.
Some of our stallholders
can’t be there every week, but
there is always good food and
coffee, home grown vegetables,
plants for the coming season,
and a masseur. There is music,
often buskers as well as invited
groups, and new stallholders.
Some of these are so successful
that we lose them to the city,
but we don’t mind this—helping
people grow is part of the fun.
Helena and Currawong were the instigators
of the Battunga Country Growers’ Market in 2003; their unfailing energy and
optimism overcame all scepticism and discouragement to establish a strong,
enduring market community at Macclesfield.
They have now left our market,
moving to Peterborough with
their children, but we are grateful
for their efforts in setting
up the Maccy Weekly Market.
